Zawadi's Story

On the 28th of December a male baby white rhino was found with a gaping hole on his hind back leg and numerous claw marks and puncture holes around his neck and body
Surmised to be 8 to 10 weeks old the vets together with the Solio monitoring team observed him for several hours.
The young calf was in so much pain and could not use his hind legs. Solio monitoring team together with the vets, had to make the hard decision to treat his life-threatening wound and give him the much-needed specialized care needed since it was life threatening injuries.

It was quite a struggle to get him to accept to have his first feed of milk. Our carers had to support him so that he could have his milk. After attending to his wounds, the young calf just sat there and could not move much. He was in so much pain, sad and felt alone. Zawadi was on a diet rich in nutrients to support his immune system and promote healing. Continuous observation by the vets and monitoring team to track the healing process and adjust treatment as necessary,
With each gentle touch and soothing word, the young rhino’s spirit fought back against the pain. The sanctuary became a place of healing not just for his body, but for his soul. And as his wounds closed a new chapter began.

It was during his recovery that Zawadi met Njamba, the first orphan of Solio, whose strength and courage had long been an inspiration to all. Together they formed an unbreakable bond, a kinship that transcended their past traumas.
They grazed under the acacia trees, bathed in the mud pools and rested under the shade, two friends against the world. Their friendship is a beacon of hope, a reminder that in the face of adversity, there is always a path to recovery and companionship. They remind us that every creature no matter how scarred has a place in this world- a world that they now explore together, step by healed step.
